Job Summary

The Interconnection Engineer (IE) acts as a Subject Matter Expert to support origination and development teams from siting strategy through  project maturation. The IE will manage grid injection analysis and studies, estimate interconnection costs and schedules, develop standard  processes & tools, and manage strategic negotiations with interconnecting utilities. The position requires a strategic approach to identifying  financially attractive and technically feasible points of interconnection on the distribution and transmission grid in assigned regions, as well as the  tactical execution of a portfolio of interconnection queue positions underpinning the company’s pre-construction project pipeline.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong understanding of the technical and procedural requirements for the interconnection process in target markets
  • Manage, review, & interpret injection studies performed by third party consultants
  • Support the interconnection process for Sun Tribe projects including interaction with interconnection utilities and ISOs, scoping calls,
  • Support the siting team to identify interconnection points on the grid, submit interconnection requests to the applicable utility/ISO/RTO, interpret interconnection study results and negotiate with the utility to identify economic interconnection solutions
  • Create preliminary interconnection documentation and single line diagrams in AutoCAD
  • Perform cost/benefit analysis of interconnection variants to optimize project economics and minimize interconnection risk
  • Review, comment, & summarize injection, feasibility, system impact, and facilities study reports
  • Continually seek new and creative approaches to the interconnection process
  • Support project acquisition due-diligence process
  • Participate in new market research
  • Support the project marketing process by answering technical due diligence questions from potential customers, including working with 3rd party independent engineers to verify technical assumptions as they apply to interconnection
  • Support the modeling of project economics by supplying technical and financial model inputs
  • Develop and manage Sun Tribe’s interconnection costing database
  • Develop and maintain interconnection status tracking tools
  • Develop standards, processes, tools to guide the interconnection workflow and calculate relevant system parameters
  • Model AC system parameters as appropriate as inputs to the project design
  • Management of 3rd party consultants, as required
  • Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in leading distribution and/or transmission generator design and interconnection processes; familiarity with Dominion Energy, AEP, and PJM standards and procedures a significant plus
  • Software Experience preferred: AutoCAD, power flow modeling software (ETAP, SKM, or similar)
  • Broad technical understanding of transmission and distribution systems, including the ability to perform cost-benefit analyses of design variants to optimize project outcomes
  • Understanding of the NEC, NESC, relevant electrical codes, RTO/ISO policies & requirements, and industry standards related to generator facility interconnection
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and project documentation for technical requirements
