Sol Systems (“Sol”) is a leading renewable energy financier and developer dedicated to creating a platform for compassionate entrepreneurs to have a meaningful impact in the world. The Company has financed or developed more than 1 gigawatt of solar energy assets to date. Sol Environmental Commodity Management (“ECM”), the trading division of Sol, manages multiple environmental and energy commodity investment portfolios in the renewable energy certificate (“REC”), low carbon fuel standard (“LCFS”), carbon, and power markets.

The institutional research arm of ECM is seeking a full-time analyst to join our team. This position reports to the Senior Director of ECM Research and will work directly with both research associates and traders to manage and grow Sol Systems’ portfolios. The position is ideal for someone with a desire to join a commodities research team within a growing trading desk, work in an entrepreneurial environment, expand into new environmental & energy commodities markets, and commit to an organization dedicated to financing and developing sustainable infrastructure.

The role will be dedicated to market research and analysis in support of in-depth fundamental supply / demand modelling and will especially be focused on database management and reporting to support the team. The initial scope will primarily cover REC markets with support provided on additional commodities as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Market Data Management – Support, maintain, enhance, and build out essential research data-infrastructure projects / databases for market, pricing, project, and regulatory data to facilitate the calibration of key assumptions behind our fundamental models.
  • Market Events & Technical Analysis – Track market events and perform analysis to inform portfolio strategy. Catalogue and quantify auction / RFP events. Analyze, visualize, and report on correlations between market pricing and events.
  • Project Analytics – Take lead on maintaining and enhancing all project-related databases. Perform and track supply forecasts and calibrate and catalogue key assumptions in support of model updates. Conduct market concentration analysis at a counterparty level for both supply and demand. Improve team market knowledge through the delivery of in-depth analyses, visualizations, and reports on market supply themes. Coordinate workflow and communicate with other Sol business lines as needed.
  • Market Modelling – Maintain and enhance existing fundamental market models and help build out new primary trading models, including sub-models and tools. Use advanced market analysis to inform assumptions that enhance price forecasting exercises on the desk.
  • Research Reporting – Assemble qualitative and quantitative analysis into concise, clear, accurate, and well-written / drafted reports and presentations. Constantly improve communication and collaboration tools to improve information dissemination across the desk.
  • Price Forecasting / Trade Idea Generation – Perform market analysis to support the team in creating price forecasts and the origination of portfolio trade recommendations that help the business manage risk and identify new opportunities.
  • General Support – Provide ad-hoc research and analytical support to team members on items related to new market research and investment reports as requested.

Skills and attributes

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a business, economics, policy, history, engineering, or mathematics field
  • Demonstrated interest or 1-2 years of related experience in a research or data management role; experience analyzing markets a plus
  • Highly organized individual with impeccable attention to detail
  • Strong interest in the functioning of renewable energy and environmental commodity markets
  • Desire to join and work for a fast-paced sustainability-focused commodity trading desk
  • Energized by a high-standards work product environment
  • Ability to perform and understand fundamental analysis for pricing and valuation
  • Ability to review and analyze large sets of information quickly and provide written analysis / graphic summary of data
  • Experience using Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; database or programming skill sets a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Talent for time management and a strong work ethic
  • Strong collaboration and relationship skills
  • Two-year commitment to the role with opportunities for promotions and expansion of scope along the way

Location & Hours

This is a full-time role and will be based in our Washington, DC office.
