Overview
Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation seeks a new Senior Energy Markets Program Manager to manage and lead growth of our digital infrastructure in Virginia. You will lead initiatives that unlock and enable datacenter energy power supply. This includes support for new energy supply and market development efforts, implementing datacenter power interconnection strategies, negotiations, and partnerships with power utilities for electric service. Additionally, you will lead in the execution of regulatory and policy strategies with power utilities, energy regulators, and stakeholders important to datacenter and clean energy infrastructure delivery.
You will have the ability to develop creative commercial solutions that combine knowledge of power markets to deliver electricity to Microsoft datacenters. In addition, you should be capable of understanding electric rates and tariffs for power service, as well as conversant understanding of commercial applications for advanced energy technologies. You will need to understand the dynamics of energy delivery systems and Microsoft’s own unique position in the energy sector. This necessitates that you bring an innovative, collaborative presence to the role towards driving commercial & technology execution to realize business goals, enhance system reliability. All of this is done in support of Microsoft’s long-term 100/100/0 vision – that on all the world’s grids, 100 percent of electrons, 100 percent of the time are generated from zero carbon sources.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, Law, Policy, or related field, and 4+ years experience in the energy industry, project management, business development, or related role
o OR Master’s Degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, Law, Policy, AND 3+ year(s) experience in the energy industry, project management, business development, or related role
o OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, Law, Policy, or related field, and 8+ years experience in the energy industry, project management, business development, or related role
o OR Master’s Degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, Law, Policy, AND 6+ year(s) experience in the energy industry, project management, business development, or related role
o OR equivalent experience.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Benefits
The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 – $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 – $238,600 per year.

Responsibilities
• Manage on regulatory engagements with utilities, regulators, and related stakeholders important to datacenter infrastructure deliver, cost/range management and sustainability goals in Virginia
• Manage datacenter interconnection and energy supply contract development with utilities and third-party energy suppliers in support of Microsoft’s datacenter businesses in Virginia.
• Lead or assist in the analysis of energy industry trends, market policy and regulations to proactively identify opportunities to reduce cost, minimize risk, and advance sustainability goals in Virginia
• Partner with globally distributed internal stakeholders on site selection and energy project development, e.g. distributed energy, renewables.
• Work collaboratively with external vendors and consultants on regional market research.
• Develop internal business cases including providing input on financial models and market research.
• Build relationships with external suppliers and partners, particularly electric utilities, local and regional regulatory agencies, customers, and energy technology providers.
• Work with third parties to develop and monitor analytics tools for portfolio analysis.
• Business travel required (10%-25%, subject to fluctuation with business tempo).
