About the Building Decarbonization Coalition

The Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC) unites building industry stakeholders with energy providers, environmental and environmental justice organizations, labor and workforce stakeholders and local governments to help electrify homes and workspaces with clean energy. Through convening, policy analysis, and consumer awareness building, the Coalition is pursuing fast, fair action to accelerate the development of zero-emission homes and buildings that will help leading states cut one of their largest sources of climate pollution, while creating safe, healthy and affordable communities.

Position Description

Reporting to the Deputy Director and working collaboratively with a small and rapidly growing team, the Sr. Manager of Operations & HR plays a critical role in the evolution of the Coalition from its start-up stage to a more mature organization that can deliver powerfully on its long-term vision. The Senior Manager is responsible for providing fiscal and operational leadership in order to ensure fiscal, programmatic and operational strength in alignment with the Coalition’s vision, mission and values. This position will supervise one direct report.

Through convening, policy analysis and consumer awareness building, BDC is pursuing fast, fair action to accelerate the development of zero-emission homes and buildings that will help the country cut one of its largest sources of climate pollution, while creating safe, healthy and affordable communities.

Financial Management and Oversight 

  • Manage and oversee all financial and business planning activities, including: ○ Direct and administer all financial plans
    • Oversee business policies and accounting practices
    • Review and analyze financial reports
    • Provide necessary proposal and grant financial reports to BDC’s fundraising team ○ Support and advise the Executive and Deputy Directors in decision making
    • Lead and support organizational budgeting processes
  • Oversee reporting and monitoring of organizational performance metrics
  • Provide overall financial oversight and monitoring, and ensure strong financial controls
  • Ensure that relevant financial data is presented to the senior management team, including supporting their ability to report regularly on the financial status of the Coalition to the Board of Directors

Operations 

  • Oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement, contracts, invoicing procedures, and other legal documents and agreements
  • Manage BDC’s business insurance needs, including procurement, monitoring and management
  • Oversee administrative functions, ensuring smooth daily operations of BDC’s 100% remote staff
  • Oversee the ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems and infrastructure, including BDC’s office, videoconferencing and project management software needs
  • Working with the Executive and Deputy Directors, provide staff support and guidance to the BDC Board of Directors and act as staff liaison to relevant board committees

Human Resources 

  • Working with the Deputy Director, oversee the human resource function for BDC, including:
    • Recruitment, hiring, and compensation
    • Benefits administration and oversight
    • Overseeing staff professional training and development and new employee orientation
    • Develop and implement staff satisfaction and retention strategies for maximizing the happiness and effectiveness of BDC’s remote staff
    • Regulatory oversight and legal compliance
  • Ensure that the human resource function is properly resourced and represented within the senior management team

Qualifications 

  • Minimum of a BA or equivalent technical training certification; ideally with an MBA
  • 8+ years experience in a operations and HR role, ideally for a socially responsible organization with a national portfolio
  • Demonstrated experience in financial planning and analysis with previous experience overseeing human resources, operations, and legal compliance
  • Skills should include organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning
  • Demonstrated success developing and monitoring systems to manage operational work that involves high levels of collaboration
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and reliability
  • Ability to translate mission, strategies and goals into day-to-day operational objectives
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within a fast-moving environment while also driving toward clarity and solutions
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
  • Experience managing and partnering with senior managers and Board of Directors.
  • Ability to think strategically and anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan
  • Experience managing, mentoring and coaching staff

Work Environment, Schedule, and Travel

The Operations and HR Sr. Manager will work remotely from their home and can be based anywhere in the United States. Some travel will be required, respective of Covid-related health and safety guidelines.

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $140,000, commensurate with experience, plus a competitive benefits package including health coverage, retirement benefits, flexible paid leave, paid holidays, and access to professional development resources.
