BlackOak Collective’s Quarterly ReportMembers Spotlight: Jonathan Nash | From Family Fishing to Fisheries Policy

Jonathan Nash grew up in Glendale, Arizona, where childhood fishing trips with his parents and grandparents sparked a lifelong passion for marine life and environmental stewardship. That early connection led him to Hampton University—his family’s fourth-generation alma mater—where he earned a degree in marine science and found a supportive community of fellow Black scientists.

During college, Jonathan’s path led to internships such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Partnership Education Program where he sharpened data analysis and lab skills. After graduating, he turned to teaching fifth-grade science, which strengthened his communication and leadership. In 2023, he joined NOAA Fisheries as a consulting biologist, advising federal agencies on essential fish habitat under the Magnuson–Stevens Fisheries Act.

Reflecting on his initial connection to BlackOak Collective, Jonathan shares:
“BlackOak was that community providing opportunities and support when I didn’t even know where to look—showing me there’s a place for Black professionals in environmental careers.”

That sense of belonging became especially important when he was laid off earlier this year. Amid uncertainty, BlackOak became a lifeline—connecting him with fellowship opportunities, guiding him through applications, and offering one-on-one mentorship. With our support, Jonathan has continued pursuing his passion for marine policy and environmental justice.

“When I lost my job, I didn’t know what was next—but BlackOak helped me see that my story wasn’t over. They didn’t just check in; they walked with me. From editing my fellowship applications to reminding me that I still belong in this work.”

This is how your investment helps early-career Black professionals like Jonathan. He first connected with BlackOak through our Green Gateways program, which brings environmental leaders and resources to HBCUs to inspire and support students exploring careers in sustainability and conservation. Your partnership allows us to continue offering mentorship, access, and direction—especially in moments our members need it most.

Thank you for investing in us—and in future leaders like Jonathan.

Events we led and attended included Climate Careers Fireside Chat & Speed Networking Date Night, Chesapeake Bay Conservation & Climate Corps Fellowship Open House, Howard University Water Environment Association Green Job Fair, and a set of classroom green gateway visits at the University of the District of Columbia.

Green Gateways Impact

Through the Green Gateways program, we engaged with over 55 students, provided 24+ hours of mentorship via our Office Hours program, and visited two campuses—the University of the District of Columbia and Howard University—to connect students with career pathways in the environmental sector.
